Microdermabrasion Q & A

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is an advanced skin-exfoliation therapy that leaves your skin feeling smoother and looking more radiant.

During the procedure, your provider uses a handheld device equipped with tiny, pressurized crystals. The vibration of the device gently sloughs off your outer layer of dead skin cells to reveal fresh, revived cells.

Your body also responds by creating additional collagen and elastin, skin compounds that boost tissue smoothness, elasticity, and resilience.

All the benefits of microdermabrasion are achieved without the use of chemicals, medications, or invasive techniques.

What types of skin concerns does microdermabrasion address?

Microdermabrasion is a good choice for people with minor or moderate skin imperfections. Patients find it leaves their skin feeling supple and looking vibrant.

The dermatologists at Marin Skin may recommend microdermabrasion for:

  • Dull skin
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Acne scars
  • Uneven coloration
  • Clogged pores
  • Sun and age spots

If you have deep facial folds or sagging skin, microdermabrasion isn’t the right treatment for you. The practitioners at Marin Skin may recommend other treatments, like dermal fillers and chemical peels for those issues

Should I schedule downtime following microdermabrasion?

Following a dermabrasion treatment, your skin may look pinkish – almost as if you’ve had a sunburn. You may also feel tightness and dryness. A moisturizer usually eases any minor discomfort.

You don’t have to take time off work or daily tasks following microdermabrasion, as any side effects fade within 24 hours.

Take care to apply sunscreen when you go outside for several days after treatment. Microdermabrasion makes your skin temporarily more sensitive to ultraviolet rays.

Do microdermabrasion treatments hurt?

Microdermabrasion treatments are not invasive, so you won’t have to worry about injections or anesthetics prior to your treatment. Most people find microdermabrasion slightly uncomfortable but quite tolerable. The entire session lasts 30-40 minutes.

How many microdermabrasion sessions do I need?

Just one microdermabrasion session brings results such as brighter skin and a reduction in blackheads, but optimal results are achieved after 5-8 treatments.

If you have deep scarring or other major skin complaints, you may benefit from up to 16 sessions. Sessions are usually scheduled about two weeks apart.
