Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable for your muscles that reduces fine wrinkles and lines. Specifically, it treats the type of lines that appear with long-term repeated muscle movements, like facial expressions. This category of wrinkles, called dynamic wrinkles, includes some of the most prominent lines and ridges on your face, like:

  • Forehead lines
  • Frown lines
  • Bunny lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Lipstick lines
  • Chin dimples

When you arrive at your Botox treatment consultation with Dr. Knott, she helps you identify the fine lines you want to target with your injections. You can choose a single area or multiple areas on your face to treat with Botox for an all-around more youthful appearance.

How does Botox work?

Botox works by stopping your nerves from sending signals to your muscles that tell them to flex. The active component in Botox is a protein from a bacteria that temporarily paralyzes muscles in this way.

By targeting certain muscles with small, controlled doses of Botox, Dr. Knott can give you less wrinkled skin without affecting your ability to make facial expressions.

What should I expect during a Botox treatment?

When you come to Mill Valley Dermatology for Botox injections, you can be sure that your treatment is in the hands of a board-certified dermatologist and not a nurse, physician assistant, or medical aesthetician. Dr. Knott is highly trained in using Botox and skillfully plans your treatment before it begins.

Dr. Knott uses very fine needles to deliver your Botox injections with minimal discomfort. For each treatment area, you can expect 24 to 48 units of the drug, depending on the depth and size of your wrinkles.

You’ll start to see the results of your Botox injections one to three days after your appointment. You shouldn’t rub the area for at least 24 hours because rubbing can cause the drug to spread to other areas.

Once the effects kick in, they last for around four months on average. If you like what you see for those four months, you can book maintenance injections with Dr. Knott.

Am I a good candidate for Botox injections?

Dr. Knott takes note of your current physical health, medical history, and treatment expectations to decide if you’re a candidate for treatment with Botox. You might be a good candidate for Botox if:

  • You’re at least 18 years old
  • Your wrinkles are mild to moderate
  • You feel that your wrinkles affect your appearance
  • You’re generally physically healthy
  • You have no neuromuscular conditions
  • You don’t have any active skin conditions near the treatment area

In order to reach or exceed your expectations for the results, Dr. Knott might recommend other treatments, like dermal fillers or a chemical peel, as part of your comprehensive treatment plan.
