Microneedling Q & A
What is microneedling?
Microneedling uses a device equipped with multiple tiny needles that is swept across your skin to create mini injuries. The purpose of this process is two-fold: To stimulate collagen production and increase the absorption of skin care products.
The holes made by the needles are so small you can’t see them, but they alert your body that an area has been injured and need to be healed. Growth factors rush to the treated area to stimulate cellular growth and promote new skin cells. Collagen, a skin-strengthening protein, increases in production to add volume and smooth out scarred and wrinkled skin.
The micro injuries also serve as channels to enhance the delivery of any gels, serums, or other products the team applies to your skin.
What common skin concerns does microneedling address?
Microneedling is incredibly beneficial when it comes to improving certain skin conditions. These skin imperfections include:
- Age or sun spots
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Acne scars
- Large pores
- Sagging skin
- Uneven skin tone
Due to the microholes created with microneedling, anti-aging serums and creams can penetrate more deeply to offer a greater impact on your skin’s appearance and feel.
The dermatological team at Marin Skin often combines microneedling with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a compound derived from your own blood. PRP contains a concentrated amount of platelets, which contain growth and healing factors to speed cellular healing and regeneration.
Combining microneedling and PRP helps your body create new, smoother, more evenly toned skin.
Do I need to schedule downtime following microneedling?
Microneedling is minimally invasive and has limited side effects. You may experience some redness and skin irritation in the first day or two after your session. There are no restrictions on activities, however. If the appearance of your skin makes you self-conscious, schedule a little time to lie low.
While the regular application of sunscreen is always important, it’s non-negotiable after you’ve undergone microneedling because your skin is temporarily extra sensitive to ultraviolet rays of the sun.
When will I see the results of microneedling?
You’ll notice glowing, fresh-looking skin about 48 hours after your treatment. The results of microneedling keep developing over the course of a few weeks. During this time, cells regenerate and collagen production increases to give you a smooth, radiant appearance.
